Grand Prize Photo Contest Winner
Photo/Brett Schneider

Police officer Brett Schneider suddenly found himself looking into the piercing eyes of a powerful bull, and he knew immediately he had to act.

Schneider, of Lincoln, reached for his camera. He squared up on the giant animal as it glared at him from a neighbor's ranch.

His camera shutter clicked, and the bull froze in time, its dramatic features captured in a searing photograph, which Schneider later processed into black and white.

Schneider's deft photography skills earned him the Grand Prize—and $1,000—in the 40th annual California Farm Bureau Photo Contest.

More photo award winners are featured on pages 13 through 16. With the theme of "Member Reflections," these photographs capture the beauty, expanse and grit of California agriculture, while showcasing the farms, ranches, animals, crops and people of this vital and treasured landscape.
