Farmers meet with congressmen

Discussion at the meeting focused primarily on employment and immigration issues, as farmers in Monterey County and throughout the state continue to report problems in hiring enough people to harvest crops.The three members of Congress met with farmers prior to a roundtable meeting later that day in Salinas, which focused on policies to be included in the 2018 Farm Bill. Peterson is the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee, on which both Panetta and Costa also serve. The Salinas roundtable followed by a few days an Agriculture Committee listening session in Modesto, at which Chairman Mike Conaway, R-Texas, and other committee members heard about California priorities in the upcoming rewrite of federal farm legislation.
