Researchers strive to create a sweet, early navel

Finding an early-maturing variety of navel orange that packs a sweet and flavorful taste has been a goal for many California citrus growers. Eyeing the better prices for fruit that hits the market in October, growers have planted several early-maturing varieties over the years that did hit the color mark but failed to deliver that sweet orange flavor.
