Avocado growers look for more export opportunities

California leads the U.S in avocado production, although crop numbers can vary widely; the 2014-15 season topped out at 279 million pounds, but the 2015-16 crop is projected to be 392 million pounds. But given that U.S. demand for the fruit reached about 2 billion pounds last year, that means California supplies about 15 percent of the U. S market, with most of the rest coming from imports. So the U.S. remains a net importer of avocados, largely from Mexico, followed by Chile and Peru.
